MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (WJLA) — One of Maryland's most powerful elected officials is being confused for actor Will Smith, who slapped Academy Awards presenter Chris Rock in the face Sunday night after he made a joke about the hairstyle of Smith's wife, actor Jada Pinkett Smith, on national television.

Some of the messages directed to state Sen. Will Smith (D-Montgomery), the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee chair, lawyer, and veteran, have not been very kind. In fact, some are outright vulgar.

"Why you hit Chris Rock B****," said one message posted on Del. David Moon's (D-Montgomery) Twitter page.

"I threw my remote at my tv so my 5 year old daughter wouldn't see your violent behavior," another post read.

Rock, the host of the 94th Academy Awards, joked about Pinkett Smith's shaved head, as she was sitting next to her husband, a nominee for best actor.

Pinkett Smith said on Instagram in 2018 she had been diagnosed with alopecia, an autoimmune condition characterized by rapid hair loss in the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes.

“Jada, I love you. ‘G.I. Jane 2,’ can’t wait to see it, all right?” Rock said on stage. The comment referenced the 1997 film “G.I. Jane,” starring Demi Moore, who shaved her head to portray a fictional Navy Seal candidate.

She has often discussed the challenges of hair loss on Instagram and other social media platforms.

Smith accepted the best actor Oscar after the shocking incident, for his role as Richard Williams, the father of tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams, in the movie King Richard.
